Tom over at tagged me in this meme and as I haven’t done one for ages and the thought of utilising Room 101 is very appealing I thought I would partake.
It’s hard. Choosing 3 things to banish forever. Not the banishing part, but just 3….
I am sure I will change my mind or have an ‘Ooh, I SO should have included such-and-such’ moment, but here are my choices:
People who can’t flush public toilets
God bless Thomas Crapper. When he invented the flushing toilet, he installed himself in the cistern of sanitary adulation forever. So why is it, nine times out of ten, when I go to a public loo it is unflushed? I mean, is it really so hard? I am sure people poke at the handle with their fingertips and if it doesn’t spring into action they just think ‘doesn’t work’ and exit, leaving someone else to deal with their (literal) crap. For God’s sake, just put a bit of welly into it and pull the bloody thing. In my experience, three swift, forceful pushes on the handle will flush just about anything (barbie doll heads being the exception). I know it’s not just me it happens to – you only have to go into a service station loo to see people not striding straight into a cubicle but tentatively poking their head in to see the state of the toilet before they are prepared to enter.
While I’m at it, apart from small children, is it not the done thing to wipe the loo seat too? Do I have to contend with dribbles of wee AND unflushed toilets? Really? Is the nation that grim?
All of this is, of course, from a woman’s perspective. I am interested to know what goes on in ‘The Mens’…not, you understand, in a George Michael sort of way, but on the cleanliness front.
Did I really just say that? I must be going round the (U) bend…..
Wasps
Nasty little buggers. There to ruin the tiny bit of summer we get and sting adults/kids/dogs in an ad hoc, couldn’t give a toss kind of way.
They have NO redeeming features. At all.
How many carefully planned barbecues have been ruined by the hysteria infused by bloody wasps buzzing around. I got stung in my mouth once because one of the little bastards had crawled into my bottle of Peroni. They are the only creatures that test my Buddhist tendencies to the absolute limit before I become void of all karma and kill as many of the little sods that I can. Bloody things.
Peppers
I hate peppers of all colours but particularly red ones because they are also the most cunning of vegetables.
(1) Red pepper, chopped and cooked is the doppelganger of tomato (which I love) and as such, when I buy a meal/sandwich/salad/dip that looks like it has a lovely tomatoey base, 9 times out of 10 it’s flippin’ peppers instead. Cunning.
(2) I can’t stand the taste of peppers and what is worse their taste permeates everything it touches, so it’s no good giving me a slice of pizza and saying just pick them off because even if I do everything still tastes of them. Cunning.
(3) What compounds all of this into a big ball of hideousness is the fact that I am vegetarian and as such it is assumed that peppers are all you want to eat. From the stuffed pepper of the early 90s through to some elegant Mastercheffy type creation, you can bet most restaurant menus or dinner parties have peppers as part of the vegetarian option. And even when you ask for them to be left them out they still assume you won’t mind them in the sauce (see point 2). I have now taken to qualify my request by lying and saying I am allergic to them, just to make sure my meal is pepper free. Once I actually asked for a stuffed pepper (the ONLY veggie thing on the menu) without the pepper. Talk about how to flummox a waitress.
So the you are. My three entries into Room 101. Do you agree with me?
I get to nominate some other bloggers to take part in this meme, so I pass the baton to:

Totally with you on the toilet! Daughter and I always check them VERY carefully before going in. I find our local swimming pool the worst place – I even found POO on the SEAT the other day. What is the excuse for that?!
I love peppers, but I’m a fellow veggie who doesn’t like mushrooms, so I totally get where you are coming from. Mushrooms are the devil’s food!
Ugh! Poo is just grim…
Yes, I can see how mushrooms are a similar pest to veggies…coriander is another foodstuff I loathe that makes everything taste of it.
Wow, you got really quite angry there! Hope this was cathartic for you. :-) To answer the question about the state of the gents, it’s just as bad – particularly in pubs. It’s as if an unneutered tom cat has been marking his territory in most of them. I now choose which pubs to meet friends at based on the quality of their facilities as well as that of the ale. Sad but true…

So YOU’RE the mystery man from Sussex seen surveying the county’s gents! heh heh…
And yes, I do love a good rant.
Hahaha. I do actually kind of agree with you about red peppers although I prob don’t mind them as much but they aren’t as bad as green ones surely! They are just mean! I’m looking forward to doing my 101. At the moment tho a couple of my kids may end up in there! Lol ;) x
I thought about putting myself in so I could see what it’s like…..probably please a whole bunch of people too!
I’m completely with you on the public toilets and wasps. My Gran always made me put a neat ring of loo roll around any public toilet we were using, even though I insisted I was only ‘hovering’ anyway. Wasps, horrible little creatures, one stung my eight year old the other day. I don’t abhor peppers but I can relate to the veggie thing; I was a veggie for five years and it’s slim pickings in a lot of places. Great post :)

I assume that if you don’t like the toilets here you have no plans to go to France any time soon? :)
